Nail was a key architect of the UK's vital house music underground in the mid-nineties. The East Midlands man was a DiY Discs mainstay but also ventured to labels like this one from Charles Webster. 'Brothers & Sisters' bears all the hallmarks of his work - often rough drum textures and hi hats that sound cooked up in an old shed, but with a hooky melody up top bringing some grace and emotive depth. A deft, pitched-up vocal injects a hint of old school rave energy to what is still a brilliant tune. Webster as DJ Profile reworks it with a softer and deeper feel, and the Freaks Brookhill dub is more unhinged and off-kilter to bring some fun.

Whether it was intentional or not, who knows, but Charles Webster's Remote label only put out ten EPs back in the mid to late 90s. They all stand up to this day, with many being highly sought after over on the second-hand market. One of the best of the lot and an under the radar gem is this from Jorge Felucca aka Neil Tolliday aka Nail, the Midlands house master. Four robust cuts with enough weight for the peak time but still renting plenty of depth and nuanced synth craft that keeps the heads locked in. Whether you like acid madness or cosmic exploration, all bases are covered here.
