Family Trip Disc 1 EP

Following a hotly tipped first instalment, the Family Trip series continues with a second VA [RIDE19] featuring artists from the Magic Carpet family, celebrating five years of the label. In contrast to the first record, Disc 2 steers us into deeper, clubbier territory with bold basslines, chuggy goodness and mesmerising atmospherics. True to form, there’s an understated wild card on the B2, offering a transcendent cruise to the 5th dimension. Strap in!

Magic Carpet storms into ruffneck country with b0n in the pilot’s seat, shelling out slammin’ UKG and a triple helping of breaks. b0n’s command of the southern frequencies will come as no surprise to those in the know - this EP promises to do special things in the right hands on the right rig. Pedro Goya returns for his second EP on Carpet & Snares with four cuts of electro-disco. ‘Bosac’ and ‘Dopalow’ make up the lean and mean A side, matching Chicago drums with italo arpeggiators and moody pads. Pedro turns up the funk on the B side with the French house swagger of ‘Paean’ before the bittersweet acid and deep bassline of the closing track, a memorial to his beloved dog ‘Nikita’.

Carpet & Snares boss Jorge Caiado is back under a new Caiado LDA alias with two tracks originally commissioned by Thomas Melchior for his My King Is Light project, now released through the Carpet/Patterns sublabel.Both sides strike a philosophical, almost spiritual tone, but for quite different ends. The A side ‘Process’ uses its tight skippy groove and central acid line as the foundation for peak-building Carl Craig drama, while the B side ‘Neverending Dream’ lands on a more tripped-out mood for the after- afters. Swin delights and surprises with this excellent EP featuring the anthemic “Stay At Home”. You could be forgiven for thinking that this record was produced by the leathery hands of a mature industry professional long-settled in the Ibizan sun, rather than by a friendly northern lad in Newcastle who vaguely remembers seeing sunshine when he was 6. Quality and range beyond his years - Swin is surely one to watch!

Magic Carpet ring in the new year with a standout debut EP from English-born, Berlin-baked artist Jack D. With senses honed by days spent front left at clubs like Hoppetosse, Closer and Fold, Jack delivers four superb tracks bursting with energy and quirk. Somehow fusing wonk with groove, his style feels both strangely familiar and highly original at the same time. One for the heads!
